Letztes Wochenende waren wir Freiwilligen seit unserer Ankunft hier in Gambia das erste Mal gemeinsam Kaffee trinken. Dieser Ausflug ist wirklich ein Highlight für mich, da hier in Gambia besonders Pulverkaffee verbreitet ist und ich mich daher sehr über einen Cappuccino mit Milchschaum gefreut habe.

Last weekend we, the volunteers, went to have some coffee in a café here in The Gambia for the first time. This was a special highlight for me, since you mostly find instant coffee here and thus a cappuccino with milk foam was of special value for me.

Letzte Woche wurde von Mittwoch bis Freitag das Fest des Fastenbrechens ‘Eid al-Fitr’ oder ‘Koriteh’ hier in Gambia gefeiert. Gestartet hat dieses mit einem gemeinsamen Gebet am Mittwochvormittag, wobei auch dieses Bild entstand. Es war eine sehr besondere Erfahrung für mich beim Gebet dabei zu sein und das Ende des Ramadan gemeinsam mit meiner Gastfamilie zu feiern. Bei den dreitätigen Feierlichkeiten geht es insbesondere darum, Menschen zu treffen, die einem nahe stehen und gutes Essen zu genießen.

From wednesday to friday last week the end of Ramadan was celebrated. The ‘Eid al-Fitr’ or ‘Koriteh’ celebration started with a prayer on wednesday morning where this picture was taken. It was a very special experience for me to take part in the Koriteh celebration and spend this special time with my host family. The three-day feast is all about meeting loved ones and enjoying good food.

In der Woche vor dem Fest des Fastenbrechens ‘Eid al-Fitr’ oder ‘Koriteh’ war der Markt mit bunten und glitzernden Stoffen gefüllt. Viele Menschen lassen sich nämlich kurz vor Korithe noch ein Outfit schneidern, um das Ende des Ramadan so zu feiern.

The week before the ‘Eid al-Fitr’ or ‘Koriteh’ celebration which is held at the end of Ramadan the market was filled with colorful and glittering fabrics. Many people bring beautiful fabrics to the tailor before the three-day Koriteh festival in order for them to have nice clothes to celebrate the end of Ramadan.

Vergangene Woche habe ich nur wenige Bilder gemacht. Deshalb möchte ich gerne dieses Bild meiner täglichen Aufgabe bei der Essensvorbereitung für das Fastenbrechen teilen. In der dritten Woche des Ramadan hat sich langsam eine Routine eingespielt. Jede*r weiß, was zutun ist, damit wir pünktlich mit Fastenbrechen starten können und alle haben ihre Aufgaben bzw. helfen sich gegenseitig.

I did not take many pictures last week. Thus, I would like to share this picture of my daily meal preparation tasks. In the third week of Ramadan a routine is already established when it comes to task division. Everyone knows what he or she is supposed to do in preparing the meal for the breaking of the fast and everyone is helping each other out.

Fastenbrechen Freiwilligen-Style am Freitag auf Benna Kunda. Nachdem unser erster Gang aus Kartoffelsalat bestanden hat, ging es mit Pfannkuchen und Marmelade in die zweite Essensrunde. Es kann schon sehr gut sein, dass die Bilder der Woche während des Ramadan vermehrt aus Essensfotos bestehen werden. Ich genieße das gemeinsame Vorbereiten und die Vorfreude auf das Essen aktuell wirklich sehr.

Breaking the fast volunteer style on friday at Benna Kunda. After our first round of eating consisted of potatoe salad we continued the second round with pancakes and jam. It is very likely that the upcoming pictures of the week will consist mostly of food pictures, simply just because I enjoy a lot the joyful anticipation and the joint preparation of the meals during Ramadan.

Letzte Woche war die erste Woche des Ramadan. Für mich war und ist Ramadan immer noch eine neue, teilweise herausfordernde, aber sehr schöne Erfahrung. Die Gesellschaft scheint näher zusammen zu rücken. Ich habe das Gefühl alle schaffen es gemeinsam durch den Tag, mittags und am frühen Abend kochen die Frauen gemeinsam und das Essen zum Fastenbrechen ist jeden Tag ein besonderes Highlight. Aus diesem Grund auch dieses Bild der Woche.

Last week Ramadan started. It was and is a new, somehow challenging but most especially nice experience so far. Society seems to be moving closer together. For me it feels like people jointly make it through the day, in the afternoon and early evening the women sit together and prepare the food and the meal for the breaking of the fast is the highlight of every day. That’s why I had to choose this picture of the week.

Letzte Woche durfte ich zurück an die Uni, also als Besucherin meiner ersten ‘Convention’. Eine Convention ist eine Art Debattierveranstaltung bevor es zu Wahlen von Studierendengremien kommt. Im Rahmen der Veranstaltung präsentieren sich die Kandidat*innen mit ihrem Plan und stellen sich gegenseitig Fragen.
Die Erfahrung war sehr intensiv und ich bin immer noch von der Energie der Teilnehmer*innen begeistert. Die Stimmung im Raum war sehr geladen, Favorit*innen wurden angefeuert, es wurde geklatscht und gejubelt.

Last week I went back to university, as a guest to see my first ever ‘Convention’. A convention is a kind of debatting event before student representative elections take place. In this event candidates present their policies and ask questions to each other.
Experiencing this convention was intense, I am still impressed by the energy of the participants. The atmosphere was exuberant: favourites were cheered on, there was clapping and shouting.

Letzte Woche war eine Menge los. Ich habe einen sehr erfolgreichen Youth Safe Space moderiert, war auf zwei Hochzeiten, bei der Hauptversammlung der gambischen Pfadfinder*innen und auf einem Konzert von ST (einem in Gambia sehr bekannten Sänger). Deshalb fällt es mir nicht leicht EIN Bild der Woche auszusuchen. Trotzdem habe ich mich für dieses entschieden, weil ich es sehr vermisst habe mein Pfadi-Halstuch zu tragen und weil ich froh bin, Teil der Pfadfinder*innen-bewegung zu sein.

Much happened last week. I facilitated a successful Youth Safe Space, attended two weddings and the annual general meeting of the Gambian Scout Association as well as a concert of ST (a famous Gambian singer). It is thus not easy for me to choose ONE picture of the week. However, I post this one since I really missed wearing my scouting & guiding scarf and am grateful to be part of the scout and guide movement.

Die Hälfte meines weltwärts Aufenthalts ist bereits um. Deshalb hatten wir vergangene Woche unser Zwischenseminar. Dieses fand in Bintang statt, einem Dorf am Bintang Bolong (einem Nebenfluss des Flusses Gambia). Hier gibt es viel Fischerei und einen großen Markt für alle möglichen Meeresfrüchte (Krebse, Garnelen, Miesmuscheln, etc.) und Fisch.

It’s already half-time for my worldwards volunteer service. Thus,we spent last week in Bintang, a village beside the Bintang Bolong (a tributary of the Gambia river), for our intermediate seminar. In Bintang there is a lot of fishing and a large market for all kinds of seafood (crabs, shrimps, mussels, etc.) and fish.

In Brikama über den Markt zu laufen ist meistens sehr hektisch, weil sehr viele Menschen unterwegs sind. Umso mehr genieße ich es immer, wenn ich Kleinigkeiten, wie einen besonders schönen Verkaufstand, eine schöne Farbenkombination an Obst oder Gemüse oder eben kleine Kätzchen unter einem der Stände wahrnehme. Ich finde die zwei strahlen eine unglaubliche Gelassenheit im ganzen Markttrubel aus.

Walking through the market in Brikama is mostly quite hectic because of many people around. I even more enjoy noticing the little things like nice stalls, pretty color combinations of fruits and vegetables or the little cats laying under one of the stalls. I think the two really embody calmness in the hustle and bustle of the market.

Letzte Woche durfte ich an der nationalen Konferenz zum Thema weibliche Genitalverstümmelung (FGM) teilnehmen. Diese wurde zum Anlass des Internationalen Tages der Nulltoleranz gegenüber FGM am 6.2. veranstaltet. Das Thema FGM ist immer noch stark verbreitet in Gambia und die Konferenz war gerade aus dem Grund sehr wichtig und zugleich emotional wie auch Mut stiftend mit allen geteilten Erlebnissen von Überlebenden und Expert*innen-Diskussionen.

Last week I was priviledged to take part in the national conferencen on Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). The occation was the commemoration of the International Day of Zero Tolerance to FGM which is celebrated on the 6th of February. FGM is still widely spread in The Gambia and the conference was thus really important and at the same time emotional and empowering with all the experiences that were shared by FGM survivors and the expert panel discussions.

Vergangene Woche habe ich das erste Mal den Fischmarkt in Tanji besucht. Und natürlich auch ein Bild der bekannten gambischen Fischerbote gemacht. Der Strand sieht übrigens sehr beeindruckend aus mit all den Boten und der Geruch von Fisch in allerlei Varianten macht die Erfahrung wirklich einzigartig.

Last week I visited the Tanji fish market for the first time. And took a picture of the famous gambian fishing boats. The beach looks so impressive with all the boats and the smell of fish in different variations makes the experience fascinating.

Für vergangene Woche fällt es mir wirklich sehr schwer EIN Bild der Woche auszusuchen, weil so viele schöne Bilder entstanden sind. Von alle entscheide ich mich für diesen Webstuhl, weil ich sehr von der gambischen Handwerkskunst und der Liebe und Energie, die dahinter stecken beeindruckt bin.

For last week it feels quite hard to point out ONE picture of the week because I made so many nice ones. Still, I decide to put this weaving loom because I am so impressed by the Gambian craft art and the love and energy that people put into their products.

Letzte Woche konnte ich mir etwas Zeit für mich und mein Buch nehmen (und natürlich durfte auch den Ataya nicht fehlen). Diese Me-Time hat richtig gut getan.

Ich hatte eine Woche voll mit negativen News und Schock-Momenten. Da habe ich den Besuch des gestrigen Fußballspiels wirklich gebraucht, um die Woche zumindest mit einem schönen Erlebnis abzuschließen.

I had an exhausting week full of bad news and shock moments. Thus attending the football match yesterday felt really importat to at least end the week on a positive note.

In der zweiten Dezemberwoche ist es das erste Mal wirklich kalt geworden über Nacht. Ab jetzt gehört also morgens das Wasserkochen fürs Duschen mit dazu. Aufstehen und Feuer machen, um Wasser zu kochen ist für mich ein sehr schöner und entschleunigender Moment.

In the second week in December it started getting really cold during the night. Thus the time of boiling water for taking a shower in the morning started. Making a fire to do so is a realy beautiful and relaxing way of starting the day for me.

Das Bild eines Feuers auf unserem Nachbargrundstück hat mich in der vergangenen Woche sehr beeindruckt. Hausmüll wird in der Regel verbrannt hier in Brikama und dabei ist das folgende Bild im Dunkeln entstanden.

The picture of a burning fire on our neighbouring property looked very impressive last week. Here in Brikama household waste is often burned and there I took the picture in the dark.

In Brikama setzt die Regierung gerade sehr strickt den angekündigten Abriss aller Gebäude und Stände um, die nicht angemeldet sind. Mich hat dieser Anblick in der vergangenen Woche sehr nachdenklich gestimmt.

In Brikama, the government is currently stricktly implementing the announced demolition of all buildings and stalls that are not registered. This sight made me very pensive last week.

Diese Schnecke auf einem Bannanenblatt auf unserem Kompound hat meinen Tag vergangene Woche versüßt. Der Tagesstart nach so einem schönen Anblick ist direkt viel schöner.

This snail on our bannana plant on the Compound made my morning last week. Having this amazing view makes mornings so nice.
