Langsam kann ich die Tage zählen, bis mein Freiwilligendienst in Gambia beginnt. Daher heißt es aktuell für mich packen und die finalen ToDo’s hier in Deutschland abarbeiten. In meinem ersten Blockeintrag möchte ich euch einen Überblick darüber geben, was bei mir bisher bereits an Vorbereitung ablief.
Vorbereitungsseminar
Dadurch, dass ich meinen Freiwilligendienst im Rahmen von weltwärts mache, bin ich in der privilegierten Situation, dass wir (wir sind vier Personen, die von der selben Organisation entsandt werden) von unserer Entsendeorganisation bereits sehr gut durch ein achttägiges Vorbereitungsseminar vorbereitet wurden. Im Rahmen des Vorbereitungsseminars wurden unter anderem Themen wie Gesundheit, Privilegien, Rassismus, Geschichte und Kolonialismus, Kultur und Gegebenheiten vor Ort besprochen. Darüber hinaus ist natürlich eine ganz individuelle Vorbereitung notwendig. Ich möchte ein paar Themen hier mit euch teilen.
Reisepass und Visum
Wichtig für eine Ausreise nach Gambia ist, dass der Reisepass nach Rückkehr noch weitere sechs Monate gültig sein muss.² Aus diesem Grund muss das möglichst frühzeitig gecheckt werden, um falls das notwendig sein sollte noch einen Neuen beantragen zu können. Wichtig zu benennen ist hierbei, dass ich einen deutschen Pass besitze und den Prozess daher auch aus dieser Sicht kenne und hier beschreibe. Solltest du einen anderen Pass besitzen, dann verlasse dich bitte nicht auf meine Ausführungen und checke den richtigen Prozess einmal ab.
Zusätzlich zum Reisepass ist natürlich die Beantragung eines Visums ein wichtiger Aspekt in der Vorbereitung. Es ist dabei zu erwähnen, dass ein Visum grundsätzlich auch bei Einreise kostenfrei ausgestellt wird. Allerdings nur für Aufenthalte von 21 bis 28 Tage.²
Da unser Aufenthalt über 28 Tage hinaus geht haben wir uns dafür entschieden bereits im Vorfeld ein Visum zu beantragen. Da Gambia in Deutschland keine Botschaft hat kann man dies über einen sogenannten Honorarkonsulat machen. Das war für uns als Freiwillige sehr entspannt, da unsere Entsendeorganisation das Prozedere bereits gut kennt und uns dabei unterstützt hat. Wir haben daher einen offiziellen Brief unserer Entsendeorganisation erhalten mit dem wir das Visum beantragt haben.
Gesundheitsthemen
Ein weiteres Thema, um das ich mich bereits vor ca. drei Monaten gekümmert habe ist die gesundheitliche Vorbereitung. Dazu zählte für mich Impfen und die sogenannte G35 Untersuchung. Diese ist verpflichtend, um einen Freiwilligendienst im Rahmen von weltwärts machen zu können. Sie dient dazu den eigenen Gesundheitsstand zu checken und wird einmal vor Ausreise und anschließend noch einmal nach der Rückkehr gemacht.
Themen die noch in Deutschland zu klären sind
Anders als viele andere weltwärts Freiwillige werde ich meinen Freiwilligendienst nicht direkt nach dem Abitur antreten, sondern im Anschluss an meinen Masterabschluss. Daher stehe ich aktuell ganz kurz vor der Abgabe meiner Masterarbeit, was zusätzlich zur Vorbereitung einiges an Aufmerksamkeit erfordert. Zusätzlich befasse ich mich aktuell mit Themen wie umziehen, Wohnung kündigen und ummelden sowie andere Verträge kündigen.
Und jetzt? PACKEN!
Ganz aktuell arbeite ich die Packliste, die ich von meiner Entsendeorganisation gestellt bekommen habe ab und ergänze diese nach meinen Bedürfnissen. Dazu werde ich in den kommenden Tagen einen gesonderten Blockeintrag machen.
I can slowly count the days until my volunteer service in The Gambia begins. That’s why I’m currently packing and working through the final to-dos here in Germany. In my first block entry, I would like to give you an overview of what I have already done in terms of preparation.
Preparation seminar
Because I am doing my voluntary service in the framework of weltwärts, I am in the privileged situation that we (we are four people who are sent by the same organization) have already been prepared well by our organization through an eight-day preparation seminar. During the seminar, topics such as health, privileges, racism, history and colonialism, culture and local conditions were discussed. Beyond that, of course, a very individual preparation is necessary. I would like to mention some topics here.
Passport and Visa
Important for a departure to Gambia is that the passport must be valid for another six months after return.² For this reason, this must be checked as early as possible to be able to apply for a new one if necessary. It is important to mention that I have a German passport and therefore describe the process here from this point of view. If you have another passport, then please do not rely on my explanations and check the correct process for yourself.
In addition to the passport, applying for a visa is of course an important aspect in the preparation. It is worth mentioning that a visa is also issued free of charge upon entry. However, only for stays of 21 to 28 days.²
Since our stay will exceed 28 days, we decided to apply for a visa in advance. Since The Gambia does not have an embassy in Germany, this can be done through a honorary consulate. This was easy for us as volunteers, because our sending organization already knows the procedure well and supported us. We therefore received an official letter from our sending organization which we used to apply for the visa.
Health
Another topic I already took care of about three months ago is the health preparation. For me, this included vaccinations and the so-called G35 check-up. This is obligatory in order to be able to do a voluntary service within the framework of weltwärts. It serves to check one’s health status and is done once before leaving the country and again after returning.
Issues that still need to be clarified in Germany
Unlike other weltwärts volunteers, I will not start my voluntary service directly after the a-levels, but after finishing my Master’s degree. Therefore, I am currently very close to handing in my master’s thesis, which requires a lot of attention in addition to the preparation. Furthermore, because I no longer live at home, I am currently dealing with issues such as moving, cancelling my room and re-registering as well as terminating other contracts.
And now? PACKING!
I am currently working through the packing list that I received from my sending organisation and am adding to it according to my needs. I will make a separate block entry about this in the coming days.
